If you ask locals, "What do you think of Otaru's shrines?" the answer is always "Sumiyoshi Shrine. Sumiyoshi Shrine has long been the chief guardian of Otaru and is believed to bring various benefits to the people of Otaru. Let's check out its highlights. There seems to be that "Ezomikuji" too!

The history of Sumiyoshi Shrine dates back to 1864, when the head priest of Hakodate Hachimangu Shrine applied for and was granted permission to invite Sumiyoshi Daijin to serve as the general guardian of both Otaru-nai and Takashima locations. The deity arrived at Wotarunai in 1868, and was relocated to its current location in 1899.
The deities are the three Sumiyoshi deities, Sokoatsutsu no Mikami, Nakaatsutsu no Mikami, and Omoteatsutsu no Mikami, and Okinagatarashihime no Mikoto.
Located along Route 5, the grounds of Sumiyoshi Shrine seem to stretch straight from the first torii gate to the main shrine building in the back. Just keep going straight, passing through several torii gates!
On the way to the shrine, you will see Senbon-torii, a series of torii gates, standing next to the shrine office on your left. The vivid vermilion color of the torii is so beautiful that many visitors take pictures here.
If you go further into the shrine, you will see a "Shihoinu" (a baby dog) and a "Setuke-ishi" (a stone with a child's name on it). The "Kotsubo-inu" stone is a stone with a stone of one's zodiac sign, and the "Setuke-ishi" stone is a stone with a stone of one's zodiac sign, and the last one is a stone with a stone of one's zodiac sign. On the other hand, the Setuke stone can be used to pray for growth by measuring the height of a child.
In addition, Sumiyoshi Shrine offers various other benefits such as safe voyage, traffic safety, and prosperous business. It must be a shrine that locals naturally visit at each milestone of their lives.
Now, after visiting the shrine, let's draw a fortune. Sumiyoshi Shrine has a local omikuji called "Ezomikuji," which is offered by shrines throughout Hokkaido. These unique omikuji are based on the motif of each local specialty, but how about here at Sumiyoshi Shrine!
It was "Nisshin-geppo" (herring-geppo) with a motif of herring! This exquisite pun and the fact that it is written in the Hokkaido dialect is another fun aspect of Ezo-mikuji. After safely drawing the omikuji, I turned around to go home. ......
We could see the straight path of the shrine grounds that led up to the shrine pavilion and the ocean beyond. Combined with the refreshing feeling I had after visiting the shrine, I felt as if my mind had been mysteriously purified by witnessing this sight.

We recommend that you add Sumiyoshi Shrine to your Otaru sightseeing plan, where you can enjoy a wonderful experience even on your way home.
