Discovery! Dinosaur & Fossil Continent Hokkaido Sea Fossil Museum

Date and Time

2024/10/1~12/8

This special exhibition is held in cooperation with the "Hokkaido Dinosaur & Fossil Network Study Group" with the aim of enabling visitors to discover the wonders of life in ancient Hokkaido through the observation of "fossils of sea creatures" that prove that Hokkaido once had a magnificent sea. In addition to the 7-meter-long "Sapporo-Kaigiu Full-body Skeleton Reconstruction Model" currently on display in the LIBRARY AQUARIUM on the 5th floor, a 1.5-meter-long "Desmostylus Utato," the most fully reconstructed model with almost all of its bones remaining, will be on display in the "LIBRARY AQUARIUM" on the 5th floor. In addition, 10 fossils related to the sea will be exhibited, including "Desmostylus Utato Specimen No. 1," which is the most fully reconstructed full-length specimen of Desmostylus Utato (approximately 1.5 m in length), and the 2 m full-length "Nemata rat dolphin," an ancestor of the modern dolphin.

In addition, five experts, including Dr. Kaiji Kobayashi, Japan's leading dinosaur researcher, will offer special hands-on programs, and "Daichi no Iced Cream," well-known for its craft ice cream made from Hokkaido ingredients, will have a stall selling ice cream made from kanro, a specialty of the Hobetsu area, as well as original fossil-shaped cookies. The shop will also sell original fossil-shaped cookies. Also, at the "Museum Marche" on the 4th floor, dinosaur and fossil goods from Mukawa Town, aroma mist with the scent of Mukawa Town, and books related to fossils and dinosaurs will be sold.
