The Drift Ice Story is a sightseeing train operated by JR Hokkaido and runs during the period when the Sea of Okhotsk is covered with drift ice. It runs on the Kushiro Main Line between Abashiri Station and Shiretoko-Shari Station, passing along the Sea of Okhotsk in the drift ice. Whether or not you can see the drift ice depends on your luck, but you can enjoy this rare sight from the train window, which is the only one of its kind on a railroad in Japan. The main section of the train runs 37.3 km from Abashiri Station to Shiretoko-Shari Station. The train is operated by two Kiha 40 series diesel cars, and some seats in Car 1 on the Sea of Okhotsk side are reserved seats. There is also a sales space in the car where goods can be purchased. It is also worth considering a "tour" to take this sightseeing train. There is no need to make reservations for tickets, and you can enjoy the train at your own discretion, and special tours are also available for a discount. For detailed information on how to make reservations and prices, please visit the JR Hokkaido official website, or use JR East's online reservation service "Ekinet" or "Midori-no-Madoguchi" at JR stations.
*Please be sure to check the organizer's official website for information on the status of the event.
