Before
Kitami Shrine and Rishiriyama Shrine Annual Festival <2025>
Date and Time
2025/6/28~7/2
Praying for peace in the mountains and sea and a good catch, a festival is held every year on June 28th at Kitami Shrine in Oniwaki and on July 1st at Rishiriyama Shrine in Oshidomari. Before and after the festival, there is a Yoimiya and Atomatsuri, respectively, with many stalls set up. The festival involves a procession of portable shrines carried by adults, children, and local community associations, and includes a lion dance performed by pairs of two people, accompanied by Sarutahiko (a Tengu) and an old man and an old woman who act as heralds.
When herring fishing was at its peak, the festival lasted for five days and took place not only in the city but also in the surrounding villages and shrines, with lively floats and barrel portable shrines brought out by women's associations, children's associations, and youth associations. In addition, it seems that back then it was a festive event with many outdoor stalls, plays, moving pictures, circuses, and sumo wrestling performances.
