Japanese macaques bathing in the hot springs at Hakodate Tropical Botanical Garden are one of Hakodate's winter traditions. Hot spring water is drawn into the Saruyama pool only for a limited period, from December 1st until the Golden Week holidays in spring. The adorable expressions and gestures of the monkeys warming themselves in the hot water to escape the outdoor cold and snow are reputed to be somewhat humorous and cute. You can observe them up close anytime during opening hours (admission fee required).
