A town of premier agriculture where Ainu place names live on

Population:4,400
Located in the northern part of the Oshima Peninsula in Hokkaido, this town has no coastline, which is rare for the Southern Hokkaido (Donan) region. It borders Yakumo Town to the south across the Yuurappu Mountains, Shimamaki Village to the north via the Kariba Mountains, Oshamambe Town to the east across low mountains, and Setana Town to the west.
It has developed as the premier "agricultural town" in the Donan region and is known as a producer of high-quality agricultural products.
The indigenous Ainu people once lived in the basin of the Shiribeshi-Toshibetsu River, where abundant nature remains. Today, many place names derived from the Ainu language, such as "Pirika" and "Kanikan," still exist.
