Akaigawa Village has a "caldera-like" topography, surrounded on all four sides by mountains. On clear autumn mornings, fog can accumulate in the basin, sometimes creating a "lake of clouds."
The climate is an inland type characteristic of a basin, with heavy winter snowfall, making it one of Hokkaido's snowiest regions. Snow can reach up to 170 cm even in the urban center, but the snow removal system is well-maintained. In summer, temperatures rise, but there is a large difference between daytime and nighttime temperatures, which is suitable for growing fruit vegetables.
Agriculture is a thriving industry in Akaigawa Village. A wide variety of agricultural products are grown, and it is said that almost any crop that can be cultivated in Hokkaido can be grown here. Among them, melons and watermelons are particularly well-regarded for their sweetness and taste.
In terms of tourism, in addition to winter sports centered around Kiroro Snow World, the green season sees an increase in visitors who enjoy outdoor sports (paragliding, canoeing, trekking) and those who come by car in search of delicious local food. Caldera Onsen is also a popular destination.
