Many were likely surprised in January 2024 to hear on the news that the long-beloved Chitose Outlet Mall Rera would be closing its doors. As of November 1, 2024, it will cease operations as a large-scale retail facility, with only four tenants remaining. Located about an hour's drive from Sapporo, Rera was a popular spot for casual shopping, feeling like a pleasant short road trip. Here, we look back at the history of Rera and the circumstances that led to its closure.

Opened in 2005 as Hokkaido's Largest Outlet Mall

Chitose Outlet Mall Rera opened in 2005 with 95 stores, debuting as Hokkaido's largest outlet mall on a vast 227,000 m² site. "Rera" means "wind" in the Ainu language. The mall expanded in 2006 and 2010, boasting over 150 stores at its peak. It became a popular destination for weekend shopping and dates, enjoyed by a wide range of visitors, from young people to families.

Connected to New Chitose Airport by a free shuttle bus and just a 3-minute walk from JR Minami-Chitose Station, it was also well-known as a shopping spot for inbound tourists. The facility hosted not only shops but also various events. In the past, it buzzed with activity, holding events featuring local vegetables and food trucks, and hosting live performances by artists from Hokkaido, making it a cherished community hub for both tourists and locals alike.

Changing Environment Leading to the Decision to Close

However, in the roughly 19 years since its opening, the environment surrounding Chitose Outlet Mall Rera changed significantly. In 2010, "Mitsui Outlet Park Sapporo Kitahiroshima" opened in Kitahiroshima City, closer to Sapporo. Furthermore, the past few years saw a decline in tourist traffic due to the COVID-19 pandemic, creating a series of challenging circumstances for Rera.

Regarding the closure, the operating company candidly stated, "Due to changes in the surrounding environment, such as the increase in nearby competing facilities, our competitiveness as a commercial facility has been declining."
