Pilgrimage to the "Historical Village of Hokkaido": A Real-Life Location from the Hit Movie 'Golden Kamuy'!
A Must-See! Highlights for Your Favorite Characters - Check This Out if You Love the 7th Division!
The early parts of the story, which were also adapted into the movie, memorably depict the battle in Otaru between Sugimoto's group (Sugimoto, Asirpa, and Shiraishi) and the 7th Division, led by Lieutenant Tsurumi. Key locations not to be missed are the "Former Takei Store Brewery" and the "Former Matsuhashi Family Residence," which were the models for the 7th Division's Otaru base. That iconic scene between Lieutenant Tsurumi and Sugimoto will come flooding back.
There are also essential buildings for tracing the scenes of Ogata, Tanigaki, and Hijikata's faction! You'll also find models for buildings that frequently appear in scenes with Second Lieutenant Koito, Sergeant Tsukishima, Usami, and Nikaido from the 7th Division. Be sure to explore while thinking of your favorite characters.
Enjoy Local Cuisine and a Special Golden Kamuy Corner
A must-visit spot is the Golden Kamuy Corner in the hall of the Former Sapporo Station. It features detailed information from independent research comparing the original work with the model buildings, as well as signed illustrations from the author and voice actors. Starting February 14th, the exhibit will also include the actual horse-drawn sleigh used in the movie, which was recently donated, a list of buildings used for filming, and autographs from the cast. This is a must-see for all fans!
Additionally, the village's restaurant offers a menu that evokes the pioneer era, with dishes like Nishin Soba (herring soba), Imo Mochi (potato rice cakes), and the Tondenhei Set Meal (colonist soldier's meal). Be sure to try them during your walk.
Thanks to the "Golden Kamuy effect," the number of visitors to the Historical Village of Hokkaido has been increasing in recent years. While summer is great, winter is also highly recommended for its stunning, quintessentially Hokkaido snowscapes. By the way, if you plan to visit more than twice a year, the annual pass is a great value!
