A Scene from 'Spirited Away' Found in Hokkaido? This Photo of a Sunken Railway in a Lake is Too Fantastical

A single photograph taken at a lake in Hokkaido has become a hot topic on social media, with many saying it looks just like a scene from the Studio Ghibli film 'Spirited Away.' It has garnered over 20,000 likes and is drawing significant attention.

The world of Spirited Away was found in Hokkaido

The Location is Lake Shikaribetsu in Tokachi, Hokkaido

Photographer yuya, an X user, captured this image of a railway track sinking into a lake. The crystal-clear lake reflects the blue sky, with forests and mountains visible in the distance—a perfect picture of Hokkaido's magnificent nature. The tracks, which appear to run through the water, are reminiscent of the Unabara Electric Railway that the protagonist Chihiro rides in the film 'Spirited Away.' The post has received comments like "Fantastical," "What a wonderful photo," and "It also has a 'Suzume' vibe." International comments, such as "Beautiful," have also poured in, expressing admiration for its beauty.

This magical scenery can be found at Lake Shikaribetsu in Hokkaido. It's a lake that straddles the northern part of Shikaoi Town and the southwestern part of Kamishihoro Town in the Tokachi region of Hokkaido. In fact, this lake has been a topic of conversation for several years for its resemblance to the world of 'Spirited Away,' which is what prompted yuya to visit and take photos.

"That Guy" Also Appears, Bringing the Scene Even Closer to the Movie's World...

Among those who visited Lake Shikaribetsu knowing they could capture the world of 'Spirited Away,' some took it a step further.

I want you to pass down the story of my bravery (how many times have I said this?)

What's that in the photo? It's No-Face! With No-Face there, it feels even more like the world of Spirited Away, doesn't it?

Hokkaido Has Many Other Breathtaking Views! Why Not Visit?

Yuya, who posted the viral photos, was visiting Hokkaido as a tourist at the time. Besides Lake Shikaribetsu, they also photographed the lavender fields in Furano. The lavender fields show a completely different side of themselves from day to night.
