'Winter Has Arrived' - Woke Up to a Huge Pile of Snow on the Car... What Do You Call This Situation? 'It's Like a Super-Sized Serving of ___'
Winter is in full swing in Hokkaido. For anyone who grew up in Japan's snow country, this is a familiar sight in front of their homes in the morning. But what do you call this phenomenon?
Winter in Kutchan is no joke. Just four days ago, there was no snow...
An acquaintance of mine calls a car in this state a "high-roof," but I call it "sushi."

This photo was posted by Mr. Kato from Kutchan, a town in central Hokkaido known for its particularly heavy snowfall. The car, buried under a massive mound of snow, looks like it would be a real challenge to dig out. The poster's choice to call it "sushi" drew comments like, "I call it that too!", "That's some magnificent *gin-shari* (premium sushi rice)...", "It looks like squid sushi," and "I love that name!"
The scene from about a week ago. "This is just the beginning."
The comment section revealed a variety of other creative nicknames. Some people call it "covered in fresh cream," "Yukimi Daifuku" (a popular brand of mochi ice cream), or "a giant block of tofu." With heavy snowfall predicted for this season, it looks like the people of Hokkaido will be battling these "sushi" and "fresh cream" creations once again.
