A mysterious gate called "Onsenmon" was discovered by chance in Hakodate. What was behind the sign?
Ah! That's right, that's right I've always wanted to ask people from Hakodate, what is this?
In the photo posted by the poster, Ayachi-ko, there was a sign saying "Onsen Gate" along with warning signs saying "No entry except for authorized personnel" and "Please show your pass," suggesting that general access is restricted. As soon as the photo was posted, comments poured in one after another from users living in Hakodate, revealing its true identity.
The real name is "a hot spring facility exclusively for racehorses."
In fact, this gate was the entrance to a hot spring facility exclusively for racehorses at Hakodate Racecourse. Upon investigation, we found out that it is the only "horse hot spring" in the world. The history of the facility dates back to 1962, when a hot spring for racehorses was opened in Yunokawa Onsen. After that, it was temporarily closed due to transportation issues, but due to strong requests from stable personnel, it was reinstalled in the location shown in the post in 1981.
The hot spring water is still drawn from Yunokawa Onsen, and injured racehorses come here to receive care and relaxation.
Once used by famous horses! Nearby, there is also Hanazono Onsen, which is open to humans.
Apparently this horse hot spring has also been used by famous horses, including triple crown winner Narita Brian. Also, not only race horses, but also humans can enter the hot spring "Hanazono Onsen" which is just a few minutes away by car and is used by locals as well as those involved in horse racing. If you're visiting the Hakodate Racecourse, why not drop by?
