This mysterious, mushroom-shaped tower stands alone at a corner of an intersection. Its unique appearance has sparked a flurry of comments, with people guessing its identity: "Is it for use during heavy snowfall?" or "Is it a lighthouse?"
The Mysterious Tower is Actually the "Oldest in Japan" Historical Structure
If you look closely at the photo, you can see the city tram tracks in front of the tower. The true identity of this tower is the "Streetcar Control Tower," located near Hakodate's "Jujigai" tram stop.
This building was once used to switch the tramway points (tracks). It is no longer in use due to automation but has been preserved in its original form. It is a very historic structure, said to be the oldest streetcar control tower in Japan.
Hakodate's Townscape Steeped in History
The person who posted the photo is Tsugaru Amu, who was visiting Hakodate from Aomori Prefecture. They love the historic atmosphere of Hakodate's streets, saying that there's always something new to discover, from cafes and restaurants with old-world charm to the hot spring districts with running trams and the town's many hills.

Mount Hakodate and the Red Brick Warehouses
Tsugaru Amu's recent visit to Hakodate was prompted by a collaboration event for the popular TV anime "Golden Kamuy," which is set in Hokkaido. Until July 26, the entire city of Hakodate is being "dyed in gold," with specially wrapped trams running and a stamp rally for exploring the city.
