Back in regular service after two years! A charmingly retro streetcar
Hakodate City Tram "Hakodate Haikara-go"
This is a restored version of the streetcar affectionately known as the "chin-chin densha" (ding-ding tram) during the Meiji era, and it has resumed regular service this year after a two-year hiatus. In addition to the driver, a dedicated conductor is on board to provide hospitality, such as distributing commemorative boarding passes and helping with photos.
*Advance online reservation is required to board. (As it is by reservation only, you may not be able to board depending on availability.)

The "Shinkansen of the Sea" that connected Hakodate and Aomori
Hakodate City Seikan Ferry Memorial Museum Mashumaru
The Mashumaru was in service until the last day of the Seikan Ferry in 1988. It is now moored at its former pier and open to the public as a museum ship. You can sit in the actual carpeted box seats and chair seats used back then, allowing you to relive a Showa-era journey. The green car reserved seats are highly recommended; the backrests recline surprisingly far.

Currently, a "Vintage Photo Exhibition" is being held to commemorate the 70th anniversary, and they are looking for photos taken in the park before 2010.

Wakana Hori on "The Charms of Hakodate City"
Retro trams, ferries, and an amusement park. These are all scenes that the people of Hakodate have cherished and carefully preserved as "good old things." It is because of their warm hearts that treasure history like a jewel that the beautiful, exotic townscape continues to shine. I feel that the warmth of the local people is the greatest charm of Hakodate.
