This mysterious, mushroom-shaped tower stands alone at a corner of an intersection. Its unique appearance has sparked a flurry of comments, with people guessing its identity: "Is it for use during heavy snowfall?" or "Is it a lighthouse?"

The Mysterious Tower is Actually the "Oldest in Japan" Historical Structure

If you look closely at the photo, you can see the city tram tracks in front of the tower. The true identity of this tower is the "Streetcar Control Tower," located near Hakodate's "Jujigai" tram stop.

This building was once used to switch the tramway points (tracks). It is no longer in use due to automation but has been preserved in its original form. It is a very historic structure, said to be the oldest streetcar control tower in Japan.
