Hokkaido

A humorous illustration depicting the “rocky boat experiences” on a ferry to Hokkaido has become a hot topic on social media. Yet, the creator is such a fan of sea travel that they've taken the ferry for six consecutive years. We asked them about the unique joys of the Hokkaido ferry, which they say "has a charm that outweighs the occasional rough seas."

When I tell people I went to Hokkaido by boat, they often ask, "Doesn't it get rocky?"
It's rare, but sometimes it gets pretty wild.

The post illustrates the relatable experiences of a rocky ferry ride to Hokkaido. Trying to walk straight but staggering, the bath turning into a wave pool, and belongings sliding around... It even shows the artist surrendering to the motion in bed, thinking, "This is a cradle. I am a baby." The exquisite detail, born from real experience, has garnered over 1,000 "likes" for the post.

The artist, Hoshi, is a huge fan of traveling by sea. We asked Hoshi to tell us more about the charms of the Hokkaido ferry.

Hoshi, who shares travel illustrations and underwater photography, used to fly to Hokkaido. However, about six years ago, wanting to visit Hokkaido with their own car, they boarded a ferry from Tsuruga Port to Tomakomai East Port. That was their first encounter with sea travel.

One day, I wanted to go to Hokkaido with my own car, so I took the ferry from Tsuruga to Tomakomai. That's when I discovered how enjoyable boat travel is, and ever since, it's become an annual tradition to go to Hokkaido by ferry at least once a year.

While they sometimes experience the kind of rocking depicted in the viral illustration, Hoshi says, "To be honest, it rarely gets that rough, and most of the time, it's a wonderful sea journey." They also shared more about the appeal of the Hokkaido ferry:

The charms of a sea voyage are countless. The ferries to Hokkaido, in particular, are well-equipped with cabins, large public baths, restaurants, cafes, and game centers, so you won't get bored at all during the 20-plus-hour journey. Taking a nap in a room with an ocean view while listening to the sound of the waves is something I truly recommend.
