Tomakomai City

Tarumaeyama Shrine, located in Tomakomai City, is a familiar place for citizens to visit at various milestones in their lives, including Hatsumode, prayers for safe delivery, and Shichi-Go-San pilgrimages. The origin of the shrine dates back to the Meiji era (1868-1912), and it has been a spiritual center for people. Let us take a closer look at the charm of such a historic Tarumaeyama Shrine.

In 1875, three deities, Oyamatsumi, Kukunochi, and Kayanohime, were designated as the deities of worship by order of the Emperor Meiji, and were returned from the foot of the mountain to the town center, where they were dedicated as the local shrine for the general protection of the area. Later, in 1936, the shrine was elevated to the status of a prefectural shrine (former shrine status) and became one of the most prominent shrines in Hokkaido.
A small shrine that was moved together with the shrine at the time of its dedication is the "Inarisha Uganomikamonokami" and can still be seen within the shrine grounds. It is said to be responsible for food, clothing, and shelter, and to bring prosperity to business. Other shrines on the grounds include "Tenmansha Sugawara no Michizane", which was dispatched from Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine in 1986, and "Shotoku Shrine Shotoku Taishi", which was relocated in 1996, and visitors can visit these shrines for different purposes. Some of the more unusual and familiar shrines, such as "Hotei-san" and "Kaeru-san," offer comfort and relaxation to visitors.
Now, here at Tarumaeyama Shrine, we also offer Ezomikuji. Ezomikuji is a series of local mikuji that have been on sale since 2016, and are unique fortunes made by shrines around Hokkaido, each with a motif of a local specialty. The one available at Tarumaeyama Shrine is the aptly named "Kaiun Ichinenkou", which is based on the hokki-gai shellfish motif.
In fact, Tomakomai boasts the largest hokki-gai shellfish catch in Japan. Ezomikuji, where you can also get such trivia, is popular mainly among tourists. One of the fun points is that it is written in the Hokkaido dialect. If you get it in one place, you may want to tour around the province to complete the collection.
Tarumaeyama Shrine also has many seasonal events, including an annual festival in July. 5 minutes by car from JR Tomakomai Station, it is a great place to stop by when visiting Tomakomai for sightseeing.

Just walking around the spacious grounds will give you a sense of peace and tranquility.
