Drift ice comes ashore on the Okhotsk coast of Hokkaido from late January. In particular, around Utoro on the Shiretoko Peninsula, the sea is covered with ice like a pure white land at its peak. This is an activity unique to Utoro, where you can experience such Arctic phenomena and scenery.
In February, the sea is frozen over with ice, transforming into a scene that seems like something other than Japan. The endless drift ice fields stir up the romantic notion that they might even extend to the continent. If you want to walk through this extraordinary space that resembles the white surface of the moon, then the "Drift Ice Walk" tour will make that dream come true. By donning a dry suit and accompanied by a professional guide, you can touch and ride the mysterious drift ice that has traveled south with the seasonal winds and ocean currents for about 1,000 km across the Sea of Okhotsk!
