Public Art Research Center 12 [PARC12] Sustainable Alternatives

Date and Time

2025/10/18~26

11:00 - 19:00

PARC has been examining contemporary public art and public spaces from various angles, using Chi-Ka-Ho, a shopping mall with a daily foot traffic of approximately 70,000 people, as its backdrop. The theme of its 12th event is "Sustainable Alternatives." In recent years, numerous alternative spaces and projects run by artists and others have emerged across Japan. As artists and organizers, we ourselves find exhibition spaces, secure budgets, and handle public relations. In rural areas, sustaining these spaces poses significant challenges, including the difficulty of securing long-term funding, a lack of critical feedback and feedback, a lack of collaborators and supporters, and a paucity of arts and culture jobs. Furthermore, organizers face challenges due to changing life stages and aging, as well as changes in the times and environment, forcing them to change their artworks and activities. This time, we will share examples of alternative activities from Japan and abroad through an exhibition and talk event, exploring questions such as "How do independent activities sustain themselves?" and "How do they balance work with child-rearing and work?" This program allows participants to learn from case studies and explore how to address challenges in their own activities and make them sustainable.
