The 'Shashin Koshien' tournament, which began in 1994 in Higashikawa-cho, Hokkaido, the 'Town of Photography,' to determine the best high school photography club in Japan, has seen a cumulative total of 33,603 high school students from 11,201 schools across the country take on the challenge and compete with their skills. In this tournament, entries of collaborative works (photo sets) are solicited from high school photography clubs and circles nationwide, and 18 outstanding schools are selected through a work review in the first round judging (1st round) and a presentation review in the block judging sessions (2nd round) held in each of the 11 blocks nationwide. The selected schools gather in Higashikawa-cho, the venue for the main tournament, and create their works while demonstrating teamwork under the same conditions in the photography fields of Higashikawa-cho, Biei-cho, Kamifurano-cho, Higashikagura-cho, and Asahikawa City, aiming to become the number one high school photography club in the nation.
