Started in 1994 in Higashikawa-cho, Hokkaido, the 'Town of Photography,' 'Shashin Koshien' is a tournament to determine the best high school photography club in Japan. To date, a total of 33,603 high school students from 11,201 schools across the country have taken on the challenge and competed with their skills. In this tournament, we solicit collaboratively produced works (photo sets) from high school photography clubs and circles nationwide, and through a work screening in the first round judging (1st round), and a presentation screening in the block judging sessions (2nd round) held in each of the 11 blocks nationwide, 18 outstanding schools are selected. They gather in Higashikawa-cho, the venue for the main tournament, and using Higashikawa-cho, Biei-cho, Kamifurano-cho, Higashikagura-cho, and Asahikawa-shi as their shooting fields, they create their works while demonstrating teamwork under the same conditions, aiming to become the best high school photography club in the nation.
