Places associated with telecommunications
Telephone communication between Hokkaido and Sakhalin was connected by submarine cables.
For 30 years from 1934 to 1964, Sarufutsu Village Hama Sarufutsu was a relay point for landings.
Although Wakkanai City is closer in a straight line, Sarufutsu Hama Sarufutsu was chosen as the relay point due to tidal currents and other factors.
After the defeat in World War II, during the Moka Incident on August 20, 1945, the Sarufutsu telephone relay station received the last message from the telephone operator of the Moka Post Office who committed suicide.
The site is dedicated to the repose of the dead telephone operator's soul and to the achievements of telecommunications for future generations.
