The Lake Where Time Stops Onneto
Onneto is a beautiful lake with a circumference of 2.5 km located at the westernmost tip of Akan-Mashu National Park, at the foot of Mt. Its beauty and wilderness charm attract many tourists. This mysterious lake changes its color from clear blue to emerald green to dark blue depending on the season, weather and viewing angle.
On the west side of the lakeside, a wooden observation deck offers a panoramic view of the Onneto with Mount Hyoaman and Akanfuji in the background. Around the lakeside, walking trails have been developed, allowing visitors to fully enjoy the pristine nature surrounded by virgin forest. Nearby are the Onneto-Yunotaki Waterfall, the Onna-Akan Hot Springs, and the national campground (from June to the end of October), which can also be used as a base for mountain climbing. Since June 2022, the Onneto Camping Site Rest House has been open adjacent to the campground, and offers a reception desk for campground visitors, tourist information, a rest area, outdoor goods sales and rentals, and light food and beverages.
Beautiful ice formation can be seen every year between the end of November and the beginning of December when several conditions are met, such as little snowfall. You can sometimes see beautiful sights such as the lake's cry, ice bubbles, and the reflection of the frozen lake surface on Mt.
There are a few areas on the lake where gas or hot springs are gushing out, and the ice may be thin or ice-free there. The thickness of the ice on the lake varies from year to year and from season to season, so please be careful not to fall in or drop anything on the lake (even non-powered boats (canoes, etc.) are not allowed on the lake, so dropped items cannot be removed permanently).
Since many visitors are here to enjoy the quiet and pristine natural environment, please refrain from making loud noises or engaging in other activities that may disturb other visitors.
In accordance with the Natural Parks Act, power boats and snowmobiles are not allowed in the Onneto. In order to maintain the tranquility and pristine landscape of the Onneto, we ask for your cooperation in refraining from the use of non-motorized boats, such as canoes, and water sports, including swimming.
