Soshin no Matsu
This is a Japanese yew tree said to be over one thousand years old. It is very large, with a height of 18m, a diameter of 2.4m, and a trunk circumference of 7.5m, and was ranked second in the national Japanese yew category in the National Survey of Giant Trees and Forests conducted in 1990 (Heisei 2). It is also designated as a Shibetsu City Designated Cultural Property.
The Japanese yew is also known as 'onko' or 'araragi' and is a very familiar tree within Hokkaido. In Shibetsu City, this Soshin no Matsu has been revered as a guardian deity of the mountains. Please come and see the majestic form of this Japanese yew, nurtured by over a thousand years of history.
