Ancestral Pine
This yew tree is said to be over 1,000 years old. It is 18 m tall, 2.4 m in diameter, and 7.5 m in trunk circumference, and was ranked second in the national yew tree category in a survey of large trees and large forests conducted in 1990. It is also designated as a cultural asset by Shibetsu City.
Yew trees are also known as onko or aralagi, and are very familiar in Hokkaido. In Shibetsu City, this ancestral pine tree has been worshipped as a guardian deity of the mountains, and we invite you to view the majestic form of the yew tree, which has been nurtured over 1,000 years of history.
