SPOT
Shiokari Pass: One Thousand Cherry Trees
Shiokari Pass has long been famous for its cherry blossoms, and in mid-May, under clear May skies, approximately 1,600 Ezoyama cherry trees cover the entire pass and make it a beautiful place to visit.
Cherry trees are also planted on both sides of the 14-km round trip road from Shiokari to Minamigaoka Forest Park, so why not try your hand at walking? In Mikasa-yama Nature Park, cherry blossoms bloom about a week earlier than in Shiokari Pass. Katakuri (dogtooth violet) and Ezo-engosaku (Chinese fringe flower) also bloom at the same time.
JR extra train service
In mid-May, JR runs a special train service and Shiokari Pass is crowded with cherry-blossom viewing visitors. (The extra train service is organized by JR, so those who wish to participate need to apply in advance.)
