Former Hanada Family Banya, a National Important Cultural Property
This is the northernmost building designated as a National Important Cultural Property. It was recognized as a Hokkaido Heritage in 2001. Built around 1905, it is the largest existing guardhouse in Hokkaido, and was a large herring fisherman's house with more than 200 employees at that time. It is open to the public throughout the year and has a "roadside station" attached to it. On the other side of Route 232, there is Nishin Cultural and Historical Park, where a statue of Takeshiro Matsuura, the godfather of Hokkaido, stands.
Every year in late May, the Herring Banya Festival is held. Various games and events are held, attracting many visitors.
