Kannon statue made with a machete

This statue of the Kannon was created in 1666 by Enku Shonin, a monk who traveled throughout Japan during the Edo period (1603-1868), using only a machete. It was temporarily lost in a forest fire and later found in a charred state. It is enshrined at the Jigokudani Observatory.
