Oronko Rock
Overview
It is said that it got its name from the Oroko tribe, an indigenous people who used to live around here.
This huge rock 60 meters high is located near Utoro Harbor.
After climbing the 170 or so steep stone steps, the summit is flat and offers a panoramic view of the clear blue Sea of Okhotsk, the town of Utoro, and the Shiretoko mountain range, through which the reefs can be seen.
After passing through the Oronko Rock Tunnel, you will find the Utoro Public Parking Lot (toll parking is available only during the summer).
The "Takeshiro Matsuura Memorial Monument" is located in the parking lot overlooking Utoro Harbor.
The Utoro Public Parking Lot is the site of the Shiretoko winter event "Aurora Fantasy.
