Lily of the valley is a representative flower of early summer in Hokkaido. The wild lily colony in Memu, located at the foot of Horoshiri-dake in the town of Hiratori, is the largest in Japan at about 15 hectares. The tin lily colony, which was on the verge of extinction due to the many visitors, has been protected and managed and restored to its natural state over a period of 10 years. Currently, the lily garden is open to the public for about a month from late May to mid-June each year, and the best time to view the lily garden is during the "Suzuran-viewing Party" in June. The pretty white flowers seen from the viewing road surrounded by a grove of white birch trees are the town flower.
