Shintoku is a town embraced by the beautiful and majestic Higashi-Taisetsu and Hidaka mountain ranges.
With a population of about 6,300, an area of 1,064 km² (about half the size of Tokyo), and a population density of 6.0 people/km², time flows slowly in this vast land of nature. Approximately 88% of the total area is covered by forests, a large part of which is designated as Daisetsuzan National Park.
The key industries are agriculture, forestry, and tourism. The town has many specialty products, including nationally famous soba noodles, as well as local chicken and cheese, which are loved both inside and outside the town. Shintoku also has various nicknames such as "the town of power," "the town of railways," "the resort town," and "the welfare town," and is committed to creating a community where everyone can live comfortably, such as by enacting a sign language ordinance.
