Otaru City

Many people may have a strong impression of Mt. Tengu in Otaru as a ski resort. In fact, there are plenty of places to play and see at the top of the mountain even in summer! Let's take a peek.

You can walk up to the top of Mt. Tengu, but it is a bit strenuous for those who are not used to it, so we recommend taking a car or a ropeway to get there. Upon arrival, first pay your respects at the Otaru Tenguyama Shrine. This is a historic shrine dedicated to Sarutahiko, the Great Goddess of Sarutahiko, from whom tengu, or long-nosed goblins, are believed to have originated. Pray for a safe and enjoyable visit.

Next, we will meet the Nana-nade Tengu-san, who is located near the shrine. It is said that your wish will come true if you stroke the big nose of Nana-nade-tengu and make a wish. For example, if you want to pray for easy delivery, stroke the tip of the nose gently, etc., depending on your wish. Please check the signboard next to the temple!

Now that you have finished making your wish, let's have a good time! How about riding the "TENGUUU Zipline" while looking down on the city of Otaru? Gliding through the air with a spectacular view in the background is an experience not often found.

Another popular attraction is the 400-meter long "Tenguyama Slider. The speed of the bobsled ride can be adjusted by you, so both children and adults can enjoy it. It is also wonderful to hear the chirping of wild birds during the slow, automatic ride to the starting point.

The TENGUUU Zipline, Tenguyama Slider, and TENGUUU Hot Air Balloon are all paid attractions available only during the summer season. TENGUUU Zipline, Tenguyama Slider, and Tenguyu Hot Air Balloon are all fee-based attractions that are only available during the summer season!

After enjoying the attractions, how about interacting with cute little animals? There is a "chipmunk park" on Mt.

Chipmunks running around your feet are just adorable! The park is only open in summer because the chipmunks go into hibernation.

When you are tired after a day of fun, take a break at Tengu Cafe. We recommend the Tengu Soft (400 yen including tax). The karinto, which resembles the nose of a tengu, goes surprisingly well with the soft-serve ice cream.

In the store attached to the cafe, you will find "Tengu geta" (high geta). If you gently climb up on the geta and pray silently, the tengu will open the way for you and make your wishes come true. Since the geta are paired on both sides, it is said to be a good matchmaking device.

Behind the high geta is the entrance to the Otaru Ski Museum, and after passing through the museum, you will reach the Tengu no Yakata (Hall of the Tengu). On display here are about 700 Tengu-related items of various sizes, collected from all over Japan. The Tengu masks that fill the walls are especially impressive.

The projection mapping of Mt. Tengu is also quite spectacular. Many visitors may be surprised to find that Mt. Tengu is full of attractions and has so many things to see. We hope you have a great time at Mt.
