JR's "Ichinichi Sanpo Kippu" Unlimited Ride Pass: How Far from Sapporo Do You Need to Go to Get Your Money's Worth?
Ride a Line That Will Be Discontinued Next Spring! The Furano to Shintoku Section is a Must-Ride Now
Finally, the Iwamizawa/Takikawa direction. Here, you break even at Koshunai, two stops past Iwamizawa, and Bibai, one stop further, both costing 1,290 yen one way. Bibai, as well as destinations beyond like Sunagawa, Takikawa, and Furano, are all in the money-saving zone. However, please note that the section from Takikawa towards Asahikawa is outside the ticket's valid area, and there are few local trains on the Furano line.

By the way, the section from Furano past Higashi-Shikagoe to Shintoku will be discontinued next spring, so now is the time to ride it! It's a tight schedule, and the scenery will be pitch black on the way back, but you can make a round trip from Sapporo in a day with the following itinerary.

If you turn back at Higashi-Shikagoe without taking the substitute bus to Shintoku, you can be back in Sapporo by 18:47. Also, if you go all the way to Shintoku and feel too tired to continue, don't worry—you can take a limited express train via Tomamu for an extra fee and arrive in Sapporo at 20:28.
