A 'Salmon Fillet' Sample No Longer in Use Gets a Huge Response! 'I Want It So Bad,' 'I Want to Make It a Keychain'

"Food samples," now a trendy part of Japanese culture, are captivating people with their surreal charm. A growing number of people are even carrying them around as mascots or accessories. Amidst this trend, a post from Oji Salmon, a smoked salmon producer in Hokkaido, has gone viral.

Would anyone be interested in something like this...? These are wax salmon samples. We have a lot of them lying around in our factory, so I was thinking of doing a giveaway campaign if there's any demand. But I guess nobody wants salmon you can't eat...😂

Their shape is realistic, yet they have a certain adorable quality! These samples were originally used for display at their direct-managed stores, but they became obsolete due to changes in product specifications, leaving a large stock of them unused.

Flooded with "I want one!" comments! Requests also came in for use in school classes.

In response to the lamenting post, "I guess nobody wants salmon you can't eat...," it surprisingly received over 1,000 likes on social media! Numerous requests poured in, with comments like "I want one so bad," "I really want one," and "I jumped for joy at the thought of having one." People also suggested various uses, such as "I want to make it into a keychain," "I'd use it as a paperweight," and "I'll serve this for dinner when I have a fight with my spouse."

There were even requests from school officials who wanted to use them in elementary school home economics classes. In response to the overwhelming reaction, a giveaway was held. (The application period for the giveaway has now ended.)

We have over 1,000 "salmon fillet" wax samples with no use. A follower requested to use them for an elementary school home economics class, so if any school officials are interested, please DM us! We'll give them away on a first-come, first-served basis.
Furthermore, we will be giving away the set shown in the photo to 3 lucky winners selected from those who retweet this post!

We spoke with Mr. Hayama of Oji Salmon Co., Ltd., who posted the photos, about the response to their post.

"We hope this sparks children's interest in salmon"

Q How big was the response to the post about the samples?

The giveaway for school officials was on a first-come, first-served basis, and we reached our planned number almost immediately.
As for the lottery giveaway, we received over 1,500 entries, and we were surprised by the response, which was far greater than we had anticipated.

Q Do you have a message for our readers?

Without X (formerly Twitter), these wax samples would have just remained dormant in our factory, so we are truly grateful for all the attention. As a salmon company, we couldn't be happier that school officials will be using them, hopefully sparking an interest in salmon among children.

Also, while it was the wax salmon samples that went viral this time, we usually sell "edible salmon"! We offer a variety of salmon products at our direct-managed stores and online shop, so please be sure to check them out.

Oji Salmon's samples, for which an unexpected demand was found, have a strange and wonderful charm. And of course, when you think of Oji Salmon, you think of delicious "edible salmon"! Be sure to take this opportunity to try some.
