Nissho Kanda, a prodigy painter who was nurtured in Tokachi. Trace the trajectory of his career at the Kanda Nissho Memorial Museum of Art
Many of you may have heard about him for the first time when he became the motif for a character in an NHK television series. While working as a pioneer farmer in the town of Shikaoi in Tokachi, Kanda produced some of the finest paintings in the world.
Let us trace his path at the Kanda Nissho Memorial Museum of Art.
The Kanda Nissho Memorial Museum of Art is located in Shikao-cho, where he lived. Originally born in Nerima, Tokyo in 1937, he moved to Tokachi with his family in 1945 when he was 7 years old. Life was hard, but he loved to draw from an early age and created many works using a painting knife on plywood.
In his 20s, when he began winning prizes at art exhibitions, he gradually gained attention and was able to buy paints. Then, from this time on, his colorful works began to stand out in a way that differed from his previous style. By the time he was 30 years old, he had added the strength that is typical of Nikkatsu, who lives in the northern lands.
Although further success was expected, in August 1970, Nikkatsu passed away from septicemia caused by pyelonephritis. He was only 32 years old. Even after his death, his works continued to gain recognition, and thanks to the efforts of local young people, the Kanda Hisakatsu Memorial Museum of Art was completed in 1993.
Before his death, Nissho Kanda said, "In the end, what kind of work you create depends on how you live your life. When you see his works at the museum, you will strongly feel the trajectory and vitality of the artist's life. And perhaps it is this passion that was born and nurtured in the land of Tokachi.
