Written on the supermarket's sign was horsehair crab (kurigani) being sold for an incredible 100 yen each! Kurigani is a type of crab caught in Hokkaido that looks very similar to the more famous horsehair crab (kegani). Although small, they are packed with delicious meat. However, they have traditionally not been widely available on the market and were mainly eaten by fishermen as a "staff meal." The astonishingly low price for crab sparked comments on social media like, "The price is glitched," "That's amazing in this day and age," and "I want to go to Eastern Hokkaido."
The Charms of Eastern Hokkaido from the Perspective of a New Resident
The person who posted the photo is Kohei Nagira, a high school teacher who moved to Kushiro City for work. He captures and shares lively photos of the region's wildlife and natural landscapes on social media. His collection of photos conveys the charm of Kushiro, captured through the unique perspective of someone who has relocated to the area.
In addition to the horsehair crab, Mr. Nagira says he was "impressed by the various seafood of Eastern Hokkaido, such as the delicious sanma (Pacific saury) sashimi in Nemuro, the rich flavor of Hokkai shrimp in Bekkai, the size of the jumbo scallops, and the culture of eating salmon deliciously in Shibetsu, with dishes like salmon ruibe (frozen sashimi) and i-zushi (fermented sushi)." It seems the towns of Eastern Hokkaido are still overflowing with countless charms to be discovered.
