Kushiro City is a core and hub city of eastern Hokkaido, located in the eastern part of Hokkaido on the Pacific coast. It is blessed with a magnificent natural environment that includes two national parks, Kushiro Shitsugen National Park and Akan-Mashu National Park, and plays a central role in the region's society, economy, and culture. In addition to the important Kushiro Port and Kushiro Airport, and the developing Hokkaido Odan Expressway, it continues to grow as a key northern hub with advanced logistics and transportation functions.
The climate is influenced by cool breezes from the sea, and a characteristic feature is that it is very cool and comfortable even in summer, with maximum temperatures around 20 degrees Celsius. In recent years, it has gained high popularity as a pleasant summer retreat for people wishing to stay long-term or relocate. In winter, the Special Natural Monument, the "Tancho" (red-crowned crane), gracefully descends, and the dynamic and precious workings of nature throughout the four seasons deeply soothe the hearts of visitors.
In terms of industry, the fishing and dairy industries are thriving, boasting one of the largest catches in the country, and it delivers high-quality food as Japan's food supply base. Furthermore, it is home to the only operating coal mine in the country and an accumulation of large-scale factories, and is also rich in world-class resources such as the "Marimo" of Lake Akan. It is an attractive city full of the breath of life, where the conservation of the natural environment and urban functions are in pleasant harmony.
