"Coal, Iron, and Steel Port" refers to coal in Sorachi, steel in Muroran, and the port in Otaru, respectively. Since the Meiji era (1868-1912), Hokkaido's modern industry has been developed by the coal mining railroads that connected these ports. The history and prosperity of these industries can still be seen in the coal mining heritage of Sorachi, the factory landscape of Muroran, and the port and railroad facilities of Otaru.
This exhibition introduces the fascinating paintings of three figurative painters whose lifework was to depict the collapse and new construction of these three cities, sensing their unique characteristics.
