Ubagami Daijingu Shrine is said to have been founded in the Kamakura period and is said to be the oldest shrine in Hokkaido. The reason it still attracts so many believers today is that an elderly woman received divine guidance and brought herring fishing to Hokkaido, which became the foundation for fishing and development in the region. Every year, for three days from August 9th to 11th, a festival is held in which 13 gorgeous floats and portable shrines are paraded through the town, enveloping the town in the bustle of the Edo period, when herring fishing and Kitamaebune trade flourished.
