Esashi Town is a port town located in the southwestern part of Hokkaido, easily accessible from major cities like Hakodate, where history and tradition are deeply rooted. It has long been called the "Birthplace of Hokkaido Culture" and has developed alongside the rich blessings of the Sea of Japan that spreads out before it, and its harsh yet beautiful natural environment.

The climate, influenced by the Tsushima Current, is relatively mild for Hokkaido, with little snowfall in winter, making it a very comfortable place to live throughout the year. The dynamic expressions of the sea in each season and the spectacular view of the beautiful sunset sinking below the horizon deeply captivate visitors.

During the peak of the herring fishing industry in the Edo period, it achieved such overwhelming prosperity that it was said, "Even Edo doesn't have what Esashi has in May." Through the Kitamaebune trade of that time, a unique and sophisticated lifestyle culture and traditional performing arts, including Japan's representative folk song "Esashi Oiwake," were brought from Honshu and are still carefully passed down in the region today. Furthermore, the Edo Shogunate's warship, the Kaiyo Maru, which ran aground and sank off the coast of Esashi, has been restored to its full size, vividly evoking the historical romance of the Bakumatsu period. It is a fascinating town that shines with a unique brilliance, a fusion of its historic townscape that tells of its former glory, its abundant seafood, and its distinctive culture.
