This game for children in snowy regions has evolved into a new winter sport in the northern lands. Every February, 150 elite teams that have won national qualifying rounds gather at the base of Showa-Shinzan in Sobetsu Town, the birthplace of "sports snowball fighting," where smoke billows like the breath of the earth, to engage in heated battles.
