A major event that colors the short summer of the northernmost city, the 'Wakkanai Port Antarctic Festival' is held annually for two days on the first Saturday and Sunday of August. The two dances, Hokkai Teppen Odori and Nankyoku Odori, a grand fireworks display with 2,500 fireworks, a tourism and local products festival, and boat races will be held.
