Cherry blossom trees along the Ono River

A spectacular 300m row of cherry blossom trees

On both sides of the town road Hongo Kawaramachi-dori line that runs north and south along the Ono River, there are about 100 cherry trees, mainly Somei Yoshino cherry trees. These cherry trees were planted by the town in 1959 to commemorate the marriage of the then Crown Prince (now Emperor). Seedlings that had been nurtured for about five years were ordered and planted with the cooperation of the townspeople.

Initially, about 150 trees were planted, but they were cut down and some withered due to subsequent road construction and river improvement works. It is said that at the time, sheep were often let loose along the Ono River, destroying the seedlings.

The trees are over 50 years old and usually reach full bloom in early May. The cherry blossoms were lit up in the "Night Cherry Blossoms in Oono" event, which was held for eight years from 1988 to turn the street into a pedestrian paradise for people to enjoy cherry blossom viewing at night. In addition, 37 young double-flowered cherry trees, each about 30 cm in diameter, have been planted on the bank between Hongo Bridge and Kashima Bridge. The signpost reads "Commemorative Trees for the Enthronement of Emperor Heisei," and the trees were planted in 1989.

From late April to early May, a 300m row of cherry trees blooms from Honmachi Seseragi Park to the Sports Center. You can also enjoy a tunnel of cherry blossoms.
