Cherry Blossom Trees Along the Ono River

On both sides of the Town Road Hongo Kawaramachi-dori Line, which runs north-south along the Ono River, there is a row of about 100 cherry trees, mainly of the Somei Yoshino variety. These cherry trees were planted by the town in 1959 (Showa 34) to commemorate the marriage of the then Crown Prince (the current Emperor). Saplings that had been raised for about five years were brought in and planted with the cooperation of the townspeople.

Initially, about 150 trees were planted, but the number has since decreased as some were cut down for subsequent road maintenance and river improvements, and others have withered. It is said that at the time, sheep were often grazed along the Ono River and damaged the saplings.

The trees are now over 50 years old and typically reach full bloom in early May each year. To allow people to enjoy cherry blossom viewing at night, the "Yozakura in Ono" event, where the cherry trees were lit up and the street was made pedestrian-only, was held for eight years starting from 1988 (Showa 63). Additionally, on the bank between Hongo Bridge and Kashima Bridge, there are 37 young, double-flowered cherry trees with trunk diameters of about 30 centimeters. A marker post indicates they are "Trees Commemorating the Enthronement of Emperor Heisei," planted in 1989 (Heisei 1).

From late April to early May, a 300-meter row of cherry trees blooms in profusion, stretching from Honcho Seseragi Park to the sports center. You can also enjoy a tunnel of cherry blossoms.
