Cherry trees along the Ono River
A 300-meter-long line of cherry trees that are well worth seeing
A line of about 100 cherry trees, mostly Somei Yoshino, can be seen on both sides of the town road Hongo Kawaramachi Dori Line, which runs north-south along the Ono River. These cherry trees were planted by the town in 1959 to commemorate the wedding of the then Crown Prince (Emperor Imagami).
About 150 trees were planted at first, but later they were cut down for road maintenance and river improvement, and some of them died, resulting in a decrease in the number of trees. It is said that sheep were often released along the Ono River at that time, destroying the saplings.
The trees are now over 50 years old and are usually in full bloom in early May. The "Night Cherry Blossom Viewing in Ono" event, in which the cherry trees are illuminated, has been held for eight years since 1988, making this cherry-tree-lined avenue a pedestrian paradise where visitors can enjoy viewing the cherry blossoms at night. On the bank between Hongo Bridge and Kashima Bridge, there are 37 young double-flowered cherry trees, about 30 cm in diameter, planted in 1989.
From late April to early May, the cherry trees line 300 meters from Honmachi Seseragi Park to the Sports Center. Visitors can also enjoy a tunnel of cherry blossoms.
