Goryokaku Park (Hakodate): View the Star-Shaped Fort Framed in Pink from the Tower

In spring, about 1,500 cherry trees bloom in Goryokaku Park. At the end of the season, you can see "hanaikada" (flower rafts), where fallen petals cover the moat's surface, offering a different kind of beauty from the full bloom. This is the site of a fort built by the Matsumae clan under the order of the shogunate to strengthen the defense of Ezochi (Hokkaido) following the opening of Hakodate Port. Ono River Cherry Tree Avenue (Hokuto): A Leisurely Stroll Under a Tunnel of Cherry Blossoms

About 100 cherry trees, mainly Somei Yoshino, line both sides of the Hongo Kawahara-cho town road, which runs north-south along the Ono River. From late April to early May, they form a 300-meter cherry blossom tunnel from Honcho Seseragi Park to the sports center. Trappist Monastery (Hokuto): Enjoy Late-Blooming Cherry Blossoms in Southern Hokkaido

At the Trappist Monastery, you can enjoy late-blooming cherry blossoms. Although located in the Southern Hokkaido area, which welcomes spring earlier than the rest of the prefecture, the monastery has late-blooming varieties. Matsumae Park is a large park that includes Matsumae Castle, Teramachi (temple town), and the tourist facility "Matsumae-han Yashiki." Ryuunin Temple (Matsumae): The Famous Ezo-kasumizakura Tree That Can Only Be Seen Here

Ryuunin Temple is the only temple that escaped being burned down during the Boshin War (Hakodate War). In its precincts, there is a famous cherry tree called "Ezo-kasumizakura." While Kasumizakura (haze cherry) trees are found throughout Japan, due to its historical background, Dr. Misao Tatewaki, a plant taxonomist and former professor at Hokkaido University, named the Kasumizakura in the precincts of Ryuunin Temple "Ezo-kasumizakura."

Kouzenji Temple (Matsumae): The Legendary Kechimyaku-zakura (Bloodline Cherry) Whose Story Is Still Told Today

Kouzenji Temple is said to have received its mountain name and priestly robes from Emperor Go-Mizunoo. The "Kechimyaku-zakura" in its precincts is a famous Naden cherry tree with a legend about the spirit of a cherry tree. It is an ancient tree estimated to be over 300 years old and is the parent tree of the "Naden" variety, which represents Matsumae's cherry blossoms.

Aobagaoka Park has about 1,000 cherry trees of 717 varieties, including Somei Yoshino, and you can also see unique species like "Mori Komachi."
