Contrary to its beauty, there is a sad legend about Hyakunin Beach, a sandy beach stretching 10 km from Cape Erimo to Tokachi.
It is said that a long time ago, in the waters around Cape Erimo, known as a difficult place on the sea, a large ship from the southern tribe went missing and many drowned bodies washed up on this beach, and even the few who survived died of hunger and cold. The name of the beach is said to have come from the fact that the number of survivors reached as many as 100.
