A colony of native cherry trees on a hill in Shoya was selected as one of the "100 best sightseeing spots in Hokkaido" shortly after the end of World War II. Because the cherry blossoms can be seen together with the fishing port of Shoya, the area has become widely known as one of the best cherry blossom viewing spots in Hokkaido. A little later in the spring, around the middle of May every year, the area is crowded with many cherry blossom viewers.
