Nayoro City Astronomical Observatory Kitasubaru

In addition to stargazing, the museum also exhibits meteorites and projectors. You can learn about astronomy in a fun way, including in the planetarium equipped with the latest equipment. The museum also has one of the largest telescopes in Japan, and is conducting star observations and research in collaboration with Hokkaido University.

<Rooftop Observatory>
You can see the stars through telescopes installed by Nayoro City, such as the Kita Terasu Telescope (a 50cm diameter reflecting telescope). The entire roof of the observatory can be moved (slid) to the north and opened to create an open room with a panoramic view of the sky. Because of this mechanism, it is also called the sliding roof observatory.

<Solar Telescope>
A small observation room on the south side of the rooftop observatory is equipped with a telescope for solar observations. The public is not allowed inside. Images from the solar telescope are sent to the exhibition corner on the first floor every sunny day, where visitors can enjoy dynamic solar activity on a large monitor.

<Rooftop Celestial Plaza>
You can gaze out at the starry sky from the rooftop of the observatory. Here you can leisurely view celestial bodies such as the Milky Way and meteors that can be seen without the use of a telescope.

<Observation Room>
This observation room has a dome-shaped roof with a diameter of 10m. It is home to Hokkaido University's 1.6m diameter Pirika Telescope, the second largest public observatory in Japan.
