SPOT
Nayoro City Observatory Kitasubaru
In addition to stargazing, meteorites and projectors are on display. You can enjoy learning about astronomy with facilities such as a state-of-the-art planetarium. Additionally, it has one of the largest telescopes in Japan and conducts astronomical observations and research jointly with Hokkaido University.
You can see the stars with telescopes installed by Nayoro City, such as the 'Kitaterasu Telescope' (a 50cm aperture reflecting telescope). The entire roof of the observation room opens by sliding to the north, creating an open room with a panoramic view of the sky. Due to this mechanism, it is also called a sliding roof observatory.
In a small observation room on the south side of the Rooftop Observation Room, a telescope for solar observation is installed. The general public is not allowed to enter. On sunny days, images from the solar telescope are sent to the exhibition corner on the first floor, where you can enjoy dynamic solar activity on a large monitor.
You can gaze at the starry sky from the observatory's rooftop space. Here you can leisurely view celestial objects that can be observed without a telescope, such as the Milky Way and meteors.
This is an observation room equipped with a 10-meter diameter dome-shaped roof. It houses Hokkaido University's 1.6m aperture Pirka Telescope, which is the second largest in Japan for a public observatory.
