It is said that Iwamizawa began when a lodging house was established along the Ikubarubetsu River, which flows through the northern part of the city. In 1983, the 100th anniversary of the foundation was celebrated, and a park was established in the current Kita Honmachi Higashi 1-chome as the birthplace.
