SPOT
Usutaibe Thousand Tatami Mat Rock
As a scenic spot representing Esashi Town, in Showa 43, it has been designated as a part of the "Northern Okhotsk Prefectural Natural Park." The mysterious scenery, as if tatami mats were spread out as far as the eye can see, was born from a phenomenon called "columnar jointing" which occurs when lava and such suddenly cool and solidify. It is surrounded by ruins of the Jomon period (approx. 2,000 years ago) and the Satsumon period (approx. 1,000 years ago), and people of the prehistoric era would have also gazed at the same scenery. Why don't you also try to see the same scenery as the people of the prehistoric era?
