SPOT
San-dan Falls
The San-dan Falls, a large scale rock formation, is a healing spot in Ashibetsu that can be easily viewed from along the national highway.
National Route 452 runs by Lake Katsurazawa in Mikasa City and leads to Ashibetsu City. Along the road, you can see the famous "Sandan Falls," a scenic spot in Ashibetsu, up close.
The name "Sandan-taki" comes from its large drop, which appears to be in three stages. In reality, however, the waterfall is actually made up of layers and layers of sandstone, stair-stepped, with the river flowing over the top of them. The volume of water varies greatly depending on the season and weather, and when the volume is low, you can enjoy the fine beauty of the bedrock, and when the volume is high, you can enjoy the spectacular and dynamic flow of the waterfall. If you are looking for the true power of the waterfalls, the best time to visit is in early spring, when the snow melts.
