Maruichi Honma House, a National Important Cultural Property
The Maruichi Honma House, a former merchant house, has been preserved as it was 100 years ago in the Meiji era.
The family crest is engraved on each roof tile, and Western-style decorations on the walls and gateposts show the spirit of the building craftsmen of the time.
The Homma family, under the trade name of "Maruichi Homma," developed a wide range of businesses over time, including a kimono merchant, a herring fishing netting company, a shipping company, and a sake brewery, and the house was enlarged accordingly.
Today, most of the building has been repaired and restored, and the vast interior of the building, including the stores and residences, is open for tours.
