Bekanbegushi Marsh
You may have heard of Kushiro Marsh or Kiritappu Marsh, but you may not have heard of Bekanbegushi Marsh. That is because the marsh was named Bekanbeushi Marsh after it was selected as one of the Ten Scenic Spots of Atsugishi, and rapidly gained attention after "Lake Atsugishi and Bekanbeushi Marsh" was recognized as a registered wetland under the Ramsar Convention in 1993.
There are three types of marshland: low marshland where reeds and sedges spread, high marshland where mosses thrive and flowers such as Rhododendron metternichii and Rhododendron pseudochrysanthum bloom, and the in-between type of marshland, of which Bessanbegyu Marsh is a representative low marshland. The Bessanbegyu Marsh is a representative of the lower trophic level marshland.
The Bessambegyu Marsh is also highly regarded academically, with the Ohoro River, Obetsu River, Bessambegyu River, and Chiraikaribetsu River flowing through it like blood vessels, and red-crowned cranes nesting there.
There is also a waterfowl observation center nearby, where visitors can watch seasonal birds and red-crowned cranes raising their young on a screen in real time as they fly to Lake Atsugishi and the marshlands.
